If your home was built before the 1990's in Frisco, TX area, there is a good chance that you have the dreaded popcorn texture on your ceilings. Popcorn ceilings can be dingy, collect dirt and cobwebs, stain easily, and flake off if water gets behind. Now we all know that one of the easiest and more affordable ways to improve the look and value of your home is by painting, but did you know that removal of the popcorn can be just as easy and cost effective.

Want to sell or just make your home look more modern? You need to start scraping? Is it a hard and messy task? Definitely! With a few pointers, though, it can be done and in no time you will have the most beautiful ceilings on the block. Just follow the steps below.

Removal of a popcorn ceiling that has been painted is more difficult than if there is no paint on it because unpainted ceilings are wet down and scraped clean whereas a painted ceiling is a bit resistant.

Follow these steps to scrape like a professional:

1. If you can move all your belonging out of the room or if not be prepared to cover with some painters plastic. Cover the floor with paper or plastic, making sure all overlapping pieces are taped off. Tape the wall at the ceiling with plastic and overlap the floor covering. One area at a time and the mess will be controllable.

2. Find some type of sprayer and generously wet down the ceiling. You may have to spray tough spots a couple of times. The popcorn will absorb the water, the dust will be kept to a minimal, and the process will be much easier.

3. Next, your goal is to remove the popcorn with a scraper being careful not to tear up the sheetrock below. Use a 6 to 12 inch joint compound knife to do the job. Don't worry about little tears to the sheetrock. They are easy to repair.

4. When done scraping, immediately apply joint compound over the scratched areas and sand down when dry. You can use some fast dry mud to speed up the process.

5. Rent a spray machine from Home Depot and blow on some orange peel texture, or just keep it smooth. You can spray a room in a couple of minutes for the rental fee of about $30.

6. After the ceiling is totally dry, it is time to paint. You can do the prime and paint method, use a paint in primer in one, or just do one coat, but 2 will probably look better.

If you are planning on removing popcorn and painting in Frisco, TX, you can give it a try in one of your smaller rooms by following the steps above. Good luck!
